Asiatic Cheetahs roamed most of India(Pakistan and Bangladesh included) for long period Hunting by royals was pretty common.
Then British came called it hunting leopard and used it to both hunt animals and as trophy killing.
By the time India got independence in current form cheetah were almost driven to extinction since British were pretty brutal in their campaign against wildlife. The last one died in zoo in 1952.

There has been efforts in Past to reintroduce them as carnivores do bring stability to prey population and help other species thrive(see wolf reintroction in Yellowstone)it was shelfed for the Asiatic Lion reintroduction which has last surving population in Gir National Park.

Preferring African Cheetah over Asiatic may not have desired effect since African Cheetah was never endemic here.

Also Choosing this over reintroduction of lions despite India have having some 650 lions in Gir National Park.
Reintroduction to second and third location will diverge gene pool thus help in its preservation since large amount lion in one single location is at risk of inbreeding. Also considering the 650 lions traces its root back to some 12-20 lions in 1940s its highly vulnerable to epedemic ie like these
