"Do you know how long this... I guess awakening? Process is supposed to last?" I asked, looking upwards trying to catch a glimpse of my horns.

 

"I don't really know...." Umbra answered. "I think it's different for everyone."

"Why can't this stuff just be written down? Migrane for eight hours, two hours transition, boom done..." I grumble to myself, trying to stretch my back a little.

 

"Well...." Umbra paused, and thought for a second. "I'm not sure if I should say this but... you did tell me that it wouldn't be simple."

"Wait, I knew? Does this mean I'll get more than horns?" I ask worriedly. "Please tell me I won't turn blue or something..."

 

Umbra laughed. "Don't be silly! Honestly the best thing you could do now is rest up."

"Like sleep? Or sit on the couch watching monitors? Or..." I shake my head. "So much stuff to think about..."

 

Umbra nodded. "Sleep is a good idea. It will be less painful that way, no?"

"Well unless I sleep on my arm wrong, or theres something under the bed, or someone stabs me, or..." I decide to calm myself down by checking my pda.

 

Umbra looked a little worried. "Is there something the matter? You're... not usually like this. Tell me what's wrong?"

"Ah, just information overload, mixed with a headache..." I informed her. I looked for a place to sit down.

 

Umbra frowned, and bit her lip. She grabbed a nearby bottle of pain medication and threw it over to you. You catch it, and immediately neck a palm full of pills. You were fairly certain you were going to need at least that much in order for it to even touch the pain. You sat down and sighed.

"Aye, thanks... Think I will take you up on that nap, though..." I stretched wide, hoping to get any stiffness out.

 

Umbra nodded. She shifted from her position on the bed and allowed you to flop underneath the covers. She tucked you in and you fell asleep almost immediately.

"Somewhere safe?"

You nodded in response. If you were honest with yourself, you really didn't want to take her to Ashgate. A child deserved better then to be locked up for circumstances out of her control. "It's a place where... Unknown things like you are kept for safe-keeping." you explained. "I work there."

"Can't I... g-go home?" she sobbed.

"You can't."

The girl sobbed even louder, and struggled against your hold. You heard a faint rustling of leaves in the distance, and pinned Rydia down. You covered her mouth and brought a finger to your lips.

I reach for my weapon. Gently, I whisper in her ear. "At home, you'd bring things like this... To your family, they'd be hurt... At Ashgate..." I raise the gun into the air, firing off a warning shot at the head of whatever was coming. "You'll be safe."
