It's a bit hard to visualize (and understand), but going with a gut feeling, probably the second option.

See if I can put it better. There will be two background patterns and there will be one colour for each pattern so there will be a total of the 12 ranks. Should the pattern alternate immediately so there will be two greens first, then two reds. Or should it be all of one pattern first, then the next one?

This will enable me to get the first lot done and we can at least add them whilst I work out the second one. I doubt anyone will cap it in the meantime.
