Idk. I'm just speculating, but as far as I can tell, the issue is just all on the linework. To me it seems like somehow they fucked up deinterlacing the video or something, unless the source was fucked.

Here are my best most obvious examples.



Top one if you look at the image in a new tab, you'll see that it has interlacing kind of still present around some parts. The latter one the lines are just fucked, like again, residual interlacing artifacts on the lines. Also kind of faint ghosting or something around the lines. It almost looks like they need TAA lmao.

I think the upscaling just made the imperfections stand out more, but who knows if the issue was with their source files or the actual transfer.

 

The show is from the unfortunate era of digitally mastered SD content. Older anime which was made from the 90s, like dragon ball for example, was mastered on film. So they can scan the film at a higher resolution (1080p or 4K) and actually remaster it in HD or 4K, which isn't just upscaling it. However, anime from like 2000-2012 I wanna say, is stuck on a 480p or 480i digital source. So the only way they can get "1080p" is by upscaling it from the SD source. So that's why you get like oversharpened or blurred messes, due to the upscaling process. Nowadays anime is usually animated at like 800p - 1080p, so Naturally it looks a lot better on Blu-ray. It's that unfortunate early 2000s anime that is perpetually fucked.

With AI I actually think there might be some hope for better than what they're doing. I would still probably rather they put the 480p on a blu-ray disc and just give it ******* ridiculous bitrate like 20mb/s. Let the players handle the upscaling and enjoy not bitrate starved crap.
